BINTAN RUSTIC RETREAT: The Joys of Being

5 – 7 SEPTEMBER 2020

This retreat is for anyone looking to carve out time and space for internal observation. Escape to a private beach in Bintan, away from the resort hotspots, and learn to slow down and connect with yourself and nature. Expand your self-care practice with yoga and meditation techniques of awareness and mindfulness to help you access clarity and wisdom from within. A weekend of total relaxation, discovery and learning, all for you to experience the joys of being.

Please note that this is NOT a luxurious retreat or resort. The accommodation is kept comfortable but simple as we are trying to avoid luxurious excess – truly a rustic return to nature. This yoga retreat will be led by Kathy Gabriel.

THE YOGA RETREAT

Yoga is a rich and diverse practice that can be hard to relate to in a typical 1 hour class setting. More often, we find ourselves pursuing a dedicated asana practice that simply scratches the surface of what yoga has to offer. During this retreat, you will be exposed to a blend of practices, philosophy and nuances of yoga beyond the postures which can serve as an incredible resource in your life.

THE EXPERIENCE

Immerse yourself in the rustic beauty of Indonesia with a weekend of yoga, meditation, self-discovery and learning. The rustic retreats are an opportunity for you to expand your practice and knowledge outside of the traditional studio setting where you can connect with yourself, others and of course, nature. Besides daily yoga & meditation practices, there will 3 curated yoga workshops to help you expand your learning experience during the retreat. Enjoy a skilful blend of movement, asana (yoga poses), pranayama (breathing), meditation, ancient and classical philosophy, functional and embodied anatomy, somatic experiencing and science – all as technologies for acquiring an integrated sense of strength, ease and connectivity in the human form.

These workshops are experiential in nature and broken down into part lecture, part inquiry-based learning. Deep dive into the anatomy and physiology of breathing, learn how it can help your practice and life. Explore biomechanics and refine movement patterns to build a strong, sustainable practice. Create self-care rituals that are inspired from yoga philosophy to help with struggles and obstacles we deal in everyday life. Learn to drop into yourself in order to understand yourself well enough to develop a sense of self-care you can maintain.

THE DESTINATION

You will be staying at Mutiara Beach Resort, a down-to-earth, rustic outfit located along Trikora Beach, Bintan Indonesia. The rooms are basic and follow the “kampong” or traditional Indonesia style. The atap huts are located on the coconut plantation right by the beach and the resort also has a spa facility for you to enjoy authentic Indonesian massages. The Warung or Restaurant will also whip up delicious Indonesia fare, cooked according to local home recipes along with a refreshing selection of international classics, including wood-fire pizzas!

Our practice will take place under a yoga pavilion situated on the plantation outdoors with a spectacular view of the ocean.

Dear friends and community, it wasn’t an easy decision to arrive to but alas, with so many changes happening to the world, reevaluations of 2022 and many decisions to make for the new year, we have decided to close Urban Yogis for now. It’s been quite a ride from our humble beginnings in 2013 from a basic pop up group in the Botanic Gardens to a vibrant collective of like-minded yogis invested in their health, connection and nature. It’s bittersweet for us to reminisce the good old times, especially during our pivot through the pandemic. We appreciate everyone who stuck by us through it all - changes to protocols, swabbing, check-ins, safe distancing - you name it! What a time! We’ve grown so much through it and have seen so many of you grow with us as well. There truly is a community of you, so willing to adapt with us through bad weather and ridiculous Covid-measures. For that, we are so grateful. Thank you for supporting us and for being our life-line during an unexpected time of our journey. At the root of Urban Yogis is learning and growing through the spirit of Yoga and Wellness. From immersive experiences like workshops and retreats, our mission was to help people find joy in self-inquiry and practice. We know that you will continue to do so and that makes our journey so worthwhile knowing that we played a small part in that too. Thank you for seeing us, believing us and showing up. We look forward to crossing paths with you in different ways. You can always reach out to Julie (IG: @julieyogatravel), Kathy (IG: @kathygabriel__) and the wonderful teaching team at Urban Yogis independently. For those of you who would like to share the last practice with us, we still have Suntec classes running through January 2023.
