GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR WEIGHT TRAINING AND YOGA PRACTICE
WEIGHT TRAINING AND YOGA DON’T HAVE TO BE TWO SEPARATE AND DISTINCT FORMS OF EXERCISE! We see it all the time, people who have great form when they weight train in the gym, and then get on their mats and somehow lose the understanding of how their bodies should engage in yoga postures and transitions. At the same time, what you do at the gym can be greatly informed by the understanding that you build through your yoga practice. The problem is that most people tend to view lifting and yoga as two distinct sets of exercises in which lifting is primarily for strength, and yoga is primarily for flexibility. The reality is that both lifting and yoga require both! The more we can connect the two, the more powerful, balanced and efficient we can be at both.
In this 2.5-hour workshop, we will take you through various exercises that are routinely performed at the gym, using a combination of dumbbells, kettlebells, resistance bands, and other equipment to target the various muscle groups in the body. You will get a detailed breakdown of the work that is being done, and how it relates to commonly practiced yoga postures and transitions. We will also look at how an integrated method of practicing yoga in turn brings power to your lifts.
This workshop will be led by Julie Moksim, one of Urban Yogis’ founders, who has been practicing yoga for almost two decades, and teaching for 10 years. Julie is also an avid lifter who started through HIIT exercises and circuit training, and then progressed to powerlifting and olympic lifting with the help of private coaches. Over the years, she has explored the relationship between yoga and lifting. Having experienced how yoga has improved her lifting, and in turn how lifting has improved her yoga practice, Julie often applies the knowledge that she has acquired through this exploration to her teachings of both asana (the physical postures) and yoga philosophy.
