Make Your Practice Smarter Than Your Habits


An interactive workshop where you will go through several common yoga postures and transitions under the discerning eye of Gernot Huber, who will help you to become aware of your own unique movement patterns and identify those that may be hindering your practice and your quality of life. Focus will be primarily on how automated nervous system reactions may create neck tension, which is a commonplace in how we exercise and how we carry ourselves on a day to day basis. Limited to 5 students so you receive extra special attention in this personalized experience. 



Do you need more neck tension in your life? No? Then why do you (and almost everyone else) create excessive neck tension in so many yoga poses? Neck tension is only one of the unhelpful movement and posture patterns virtually all of us are stuck in. It is entirely possible to learn how to get out of these ruts, but to do so we need to make our practice smarter than our habits. How do you do that? You modify your focus, and your attitude:

  • Instead of reaching farther, focus on freeing the breath

  • Instead of paying attention to your gaze and your fingers, bring awareness to your core

  • Instead of concentrating on ever more difficult poses to master, tune in to thismoment in time, with greater acceptance and greater joy

Making our practice smarter than our habits has tremendous physical benefits. It compels us to stop ignoring the tight and weak parts of our body, which is exactly what we are doing all day long when we follow the path of least resistance. But it does more than that. Making our practice smarter than our habits teaches us how to tune into our practice, how to become more present, more mindful, more aware.

If you practice this way with any kind of consistency, both the physical and mental benefits will spill over into the rest of your life. If you keep practicing this way, you will wake up one day and notice that you don’t have neck tension anymore. And you might notice that you are more present and more joyful than you used to be, and better able to meet the challenges of life with serenity.

    Urban Yogis Academy
    Gernot was born in South Africa and grew up in Germany. He has spent most of his adult life in the US and Thailand. Drawing on a broad spectrum of life experiences, Gernot relates with natural ease to students from every walk of life. Gernot has worked in Silicon Valley and has conducted biological field work in Argentina. He has worked in a restaurant kitchen and has taught wildlife monitoring to inner city youth. Gernot has been practicing and studying yoga since 1996. While working in Silicon Valley, he learned Ashtanga vinyasa and pranayama during lunch breaks from a co-worker. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Modern Thought and Literature from Stanford University. He also has a master’s degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Cornell University. Gernot has developed a teaching style that incorporates techniques from Iyengar, Ashtanga, Anusara, Forrest, and Kripalu yoga. In his teaching he also incorporates insights from yogic and Buddhist philosophy and from anatomy, physiology, and neuroscience. He skillfully integrates down-to-earth discussions of breath, alignment, anatomy, and awareness in his classes and workshops. This integration enables him to convey key yoga philosophy concepts with clarity and humor to practitioners of all levels. Gernot helps his students maximize the benefits of their practice. He does this by emphasizing yoga’s mental dimensions as well as the physical, and the intricate connections between both.
